Custom pergola builders in Naples, Florida.
In the Florida sun, shade is the difference between an outdoor room you use and one you only look at. We are a licensed design and build team, not a dealer: motorized louvered pergolas, solid patio roofs, custom metal and teak structures, engineered to Florida wind-load code and drawn into the architecture and the landscape as a single composition. Design, engineering, permitting and construction under one roof, in Naples and across Southwest Florida.

Scope of work.
Motorized louvered pergolas
Aluminum louvered roofs that rotate open to the sky or close watertight against sun and rain at the touch of a button - with integrated lighting, screens and heaters so the space works in every season.
Solid-roof covered patios
Full-shade structures that extend the roofline of the home and turn a custom patio into a true year-round living room - engineered to the architecture, not bolted onto it.
Custom wood & teak
Cedar, teak and hardwood pergolas, hand-detailed for warmth where the design calls for wood over aluminum.
Hurricane-engineered
Every structure is engineered and permitted to Florida wind-load code and anchored to engineered footings - no dealer-grade kits.
Integrated with the landscape
The pergola is drawn in relationship to the kitchen, the custom pool, the plantings and the sightlines - part of one composition, never an afterthought.
Our design-build process.
Design Consultation
We walk the property, read the sun and the sightlines, and frame the budget and scope honestly before anything is drawn.
Site & Architectural Integration
The structure is drawn to the architecture, the grade and the path of the sun - so the pergola belongs to the house and the landscape.
3D Design Renderings
You see the finished structure in photoreal 3D before anything is fabricated - proportion, materials and shade resolved on screen.
Engineering & Permitting
Wind-load engineering, footings, electrical and motorization are specified and carried through Naples permitting by us.
Construction Execution
One team builds it - no contractor handoffs. Licensed electrical and structural trades are ours, on every Knaak build.
Final Reveal
We hand over a finished, shaded outdoor room - motor tested, lighting set - and stand behind the work.
Every kind of shade structure.
Homeowners search for a dozen different things and mean the same outdoor room. Here is what each one is, and when we build it.
Motorized louvered pergolas
An aluminum roof of adjustable blades that rotate open to the sky or close watertight against rain, at the touch of a button. The right answer when you want sun in January and shade in July over the same seating, and the structure we specify most often on pool decks and lanais.
Custom metal pergolas
Powder-coated aluminum, fabricated to the span and proportion the architecture asks for rather than the sizes a catalog offers. Metal carries longer spans than wood, holds its line in salt air, and takes integrated lighting, fans, screens and heaters cleanly.
Solid patio roofs
A full-shade structure that extends the roofline of the home and turns a patio into a year-round room. Chosen when the space needs to stay dry and usable through an afternoon storm, and detailed so it reads as part of the house rather than an addition bolted onto it.
Solar and shade-integrated structures
Louvered and solid roofs can carry integrated solar, and every structure is drawn with the path of the sun in mind. We specify the shading strategy first and the mechanism second, so the room is comfortable before anything is motorized.
Custom wood and teak
Cedar, teak and hardwood, hand-detailed for warmth where the design calls for wood over metal. Built to the same engineering standard and finished for Florida sun and humidity.
Where we build.
Naples is home. We design and build pergolas and patio roofs across Southwest Florida, including Marco Island, Bonita Springs, Estero, Fort Myers, Port Royal, Pelican Bay, Grey Oaks, Mediterra, Olde Naples, Park Shore and Aqualane Shores. Gated community architectural review and city permitting are handled by us, not handed back to you.
Recent pergola and louvered-roof work sits in the portfolio, and the thinking behind these choices in the journal.
Common questions.
What are your pergolas made of?
Powder-coated aluminum for our motorized louvered systems and solid-roof structures, and custom cedar or teak where the architecture calls for warmth in wood. Every material is chosen to handle Florida UV, salt air and humidity.
Are your aluminum pergolas hurricane-rated for Florida?
Yes. Every structure is engineered and permitted to Florida wind-load code and anchored to engineered footings - not a dealer-grade kit dropped onto a slab.
What is a motorized louvered roof pergola?
An aluminum roof of adjustable blades that rotate to control sun and airflow and close watertight against rain, all at the touch of a button. We integrate lighting, screens and heaters so the space works year-round.
How long does a custom pergola project take?
Typically two to five months from the first site walk to the final reveal, depending on scope, engineering and Naples permitting.
Do you build Azenco pergolas in Naples and Southwest Florida?
Yes. We design and install premium Azenco aluminum louvered pergolas for patios, pools, lanais, and outdoor kitchens across Naples, Bonita Springs, Fort Myers, and Marco Island.
Why work with Knaak Design Group instead of buying a pergola from a dealer?
A pergola is only one piece of the outdoor environment. We design the structure in relationship to the pool, deck, pavers, lighting, fans, screens, outdoor kitchen, and planting, then handle the engineering, permitting, and HOA approvals so it is placed, proportioned, and built correctly the first time. The result is a complete outdoor living space, not a kit dropped onto a patio.
How much does a custom pergola cost in Naples?
Cost is set by span, material and mechanism. A compact teak structure and a wide motorized louvered roof with integrated lighting, screens and heaters are different projects with very different numbers, and engineering, footings and permitting are part of both. We frame the budget honestly on the first site walk, before anything is drawn.
Do I need a permit for a pergola in Naples, Florida?
Yes. A permanent pergola or patio roof is a structure, so it requires engineered drawings, wind-load calculations, footings and a building permit in the City of Naples and in Collier and Lee counties. A home in a gated community also needs architectural review board approval. We prepare the drawings and carry both approvals as part of the project.
What is the difference between a pergola and a patio roof?
A pergola has an open or adjustable roof and controls sun while letting light and air through. A patio roof is solid, so the space underneath stays dry in rain. A motorized louvered pergola does both: open for light, closed and watertight when the weather turns.
Can a pergola withstand a hurricane in Southwest Florida?
A properly engineered one can. Every structure we build is designed to Florida wind-load code, anchored to engineered footings and permitted with sealed drawings. The failures you see after a storm are almost always dealer kits fastened to an existing slab without engineering.
What is the best material for a pergola in Florida?
Powder-coated aluminum for most Southwest Florida properties: it carries long spans, resists salt air and sun, and takes integrated lighting and screens cleanly. Cedar and teak are the right call when the architecture wants warmth in wood, finished and maintained for the climate.
