The Investment Behind a Place Well Made
Understanding the cost of a custom outdoor environment in Southwest Florida.
A meaningful conversation about design should include an equally thoughtful conversation about investment.
Every property presents a different set of opportunities and constraints. A project may involve a single architectural addition, the renovation of an existing pool, a new pool and surrounding environment, or the complete reworking of an outdoor property. There is no single price that defines those projects. There are, however, realistic ranges.
The figures below are planning ranges, not package prices or estimates. Individual projects may fall above or below them. Knäak Design Group is based in Naples and works throughout Southwest Florida, from Marco Island through Naples, Bonita Springs and Estero to Fort Myers.
Typical Project Investment
Not every successful project requires transforming an entire property. A focused project may center on one significant addition, such as a louvered pergola, an outdoor kitchen, or a combination of the two.
The investment is influenced by the size and complexity of the structure, cabinetry and countertop selections, cooking equipment, lighting, electrical, plumbing, gas service, foundations and related site work. A focused project can be every bit as considered as a larger one.
An existing pool often has more potential than its present condition suggests. At the focused end, a project may renovate the pool itself through new finishes, tile or coping. As scope grows, it may involve structural changes, a spa, new decking and a broader reconsideration of the space around the water.
A renovation is not defined by the age or size of the pool. It is defined by what deserves to remain, and what needs to change.
Here a new pool becomes the foundation of the outdoor design. The scope may include the pool and spa, deck and hardscape, landscape, lighting, equipment, drainage and the site work necessary to bring those elements together.
The difference in investment is rarely determined by the dimensions of the pool alone. It is the combination of the pool, the property and everything surrounding it that defines the project.
Some projects extend well beyond the pool. Several major elements are created or reworked as part of one coordinated design: a new pool and spa, deck, louvered pergola, outdoor kitchen, screen enclosure, landscape, architectural lighting and fencing, with the demolition and infrastructure to support them.
At this level, a meaningful part of the investment is in work barely visible when finished. The objective is not to add as many features as possible. It is to make the parts of the property feel as though they were always intended to belong together.

What Drives the Cost of an Outdoor Project?
Two properties of similar size can require very different levels of investment. The reasons are often found in details that are not immediately apparent in a finished photograph.
Existing Conditions & Demolition
Renovation begins with what is already there. Preserving sound work can reduce new construction; removing compromised work can do the opposite. Demolition is more than removal, it is access, hauling, protection of the home and preparation for what comes next.
Pool & Spa Design
Straightforward geometry is less complex than integrated spas, raised walls, infinity or perimeter-overflow conditions and custom details. Tile, coping, interior finishes, automation and equipment change both character and investment.
Hardscape & Material Selection
Quantity is only one part of the cost. Natural stone, porcelain, pavers and specialty materials install differently. Borders, steps, transitions, wall veneers and custom fabrication add complexity even within a restrained palette.
Pergolas & Structures
A louvered pergola is not simply a shade product on a deck. Size, engineering, foundations, lighting, fans, electrical and its relationship to the architecture all influence the final investment.
Outdoor Kitchens
The cost depends on far more than length. Cabinetry, countertops, grills, refrigeration, sinks, ice makers, specialty equipment, plumbing, gas and electrical create real differences between kitchens that look similar at a glance.
Landscape & Lighting
Influenced by the scale and maturity of plant material, quantity, irrigation, soil preparation and access. Lighting adds another layer, not simply fixtures, but transformers, controls, placement and balance after dark.
Infrastructure & The Work You Do Not See
Electrical, plumbing, gas, drainage, foundations, engineering, permitting coordination and site preparation rarely become the focal point of a finished photograph. They are nevertheless part of building the project correctly.
Existing Conditions Set the Baseline
Two identical designs on two different properties can carry very different investment simply because of elevation, access, drainage, soil and what is already in the ground.
Scale is not what makes a project thoughtful. Clarity is.
What Can Keep an Investment More Focused?
A beautiful outdoor environment does not require making every element elaborate. Often, restraint produces the stronger project.
Preserve What Has Value
Existing mature landscape, sound pool structures, useful hardscape or other well-built elements may be worth keeping. We begin by determining what can contribute to the new design rather than assuming everything needs to be replaced.
Simplify Geometry
Simple forms can be powerful. Reducing unnecessary changes in elevation, complicated pool geometry or excessive material transitions can simplify construction while strengthening the overall composition.
Concentrate Exceptional Materials
Not every square foot needs to carry the most expensive finish. A carefully chosen stone, tile or architectural detail can have greater impact when it is used deliberately.
Establish Priorities
If outdoor cooking and shaded gathering are central to the way a family lives, investment may be better directed toward the kitchen and pergola than toward features that will rarely be used. Good design establishes hierarchy.
Phase Intelligently
Some projects can be phased successfully. When they can, we prefer to establish the larger plan first so that today's construction supports tomorrow's work rather than having to be removed later.
Smaller Does Not Mean Less Considered
We design and build comprehensive outdoor environments, but not every client needs one. A well-designed pergola, a carefully resolved outdoor kitchen or a focused pool renovation can be an entirely appropriate project.
Scale is not what makes a project thoughtful. Clarity is. Our role is to understand the property, identify what matters most and determine the appropriate level of intervention.
