Backyard renovation, designed as architecture.
Most outdoor properties in Naples are not renovated. They are added to, one contractor at a time, over fifteen years, until the result reads as a collection of decisions rather than a place. We rework the whole property as one composition. Design and build under one roof, led by Registered Landscape Architect, since 2005.
What a whole-property renovation means.
A backyard renovation at this level is not a surface refresh. It is a reconsideration of how the house meets the site.
We begin by surveying what exists. The condition of the pool shell and its equipment run. Where water actually goes during a Naples summer storm, as opposed to where the original drawings said it would. Which grades have moved. Which planting has matured into an asset and which has outgrown the space it was given. What the house has become since the outdoor space was first built, and whether the family still uses the property the way it was designed to be used.
That survey is what separates a renovation from a replacement. On most properties we inherit, a meaningful portion of what is already there is worth keeping. Identifying it accurately is where the budget is won or lost. Demolishing a structurally sound pool because it is easier than evaluating it is a decision that costs a client six figures and buys them nothing.
Then the property is redrawn as a whole. Pool, deck, grade, drainage, planting, lighting, shade and outdoor cooking resolved against each other rather than sequenced as separate jobs by separate trades over several seasons. That is the entire argument for renovating this way. A property assembled in pieces always looks assembled. A property reworked as one composition looks like it was always meant to be that way.

The seven disciplines we rework.
A renovation touches all of these or it is not a renovation. Each is a practice in its own right, and all of them are resolved by the same team rather than bid out to seven companies who never speak.
Custom pool design
The pool usually sets the geometry everything else answers to. On a renovation we evaluate whether the existing shell, plumbing and equipment are worth keeping before anything is drawn. Reworking a sound pool rather than demolishing it can change the entire shape of a budget.
Hardscape and pavers
Decking, terraces, walkways, coping and auto courts. On an existing property the base below is as much of the job as the surface above, because failed grade and drainage are what caused the settling you are looking at.
Landscape design
Mature planting is the one thing a renovation has that new construction does not. Deciding what stays is a design decision, not a clearing decision. A thirty-year-old specimen tree is not replaceable at any budget.
Outdoor kitchens
Cooking, cold storage, counter and bar, sized to how the family actually entertains. On a renovation the constraint is usually where gas, water and power already run, and what it costs to move them.
Pergolas and shade
Southwest Florida sun decides how many hours a year an outdoor room is usable. Shade is not decoration here, it is what converts a beautiful space into one that gets used in August.
Fire features
A fire element gives the property a reason to be occupied after dark and a centre for the seating to face. Integrated into the hardscape, not set on top of it.
Outdoor lighting
Lighting is what the property looks like for half of every day. On renovations it is also the most commonly neglected system we inherit, and the cheapest one to transform.
Renovation is the harder discipline.
New construction gives you an open site and a sequence you control. A renovation gives you none of that, and it is the reason most firms would rather not take them.
There is mature planting to protect during construction, and mature planting is the one thing a budget cannot replace. There is an existing pool whose shell, plumbing and equipment have to be assessed honestly rather than condemned for convenience. There are established grades and a drainage system that is either working or is quietly the reason for everything else you were called about. There is permitting on a property that was built to a different code. And there is a family living in the house the entire time, which changes how the work is staged, where materials are stored and what noise happens when.
Every one of those constraints is a design problem before it is a construction problem. That is why the drawings matter. Documentation is what keeps a renovation honest, because it forces the decisions to be made on paper, where changing them is free, rather than in the field, where changing them is not.
What a renovation plans at.
These are planning ranges rather than estimates. Individual projects fall above and below them. They are published because a serious conversation about design should include an equally serious conversation about investment, and because both of us are better served by having it early.
- A focused addition, such as an outdoor kitchen or a single architectural structure, generally plans between $25,000 and $75,000.
- Renovation of an existing pool and its immediate surround generally plans between $30,000 and $150,000.
- A new pool and the environment around it generally plans between $150,000 and $300,000.
- Complete reworking of an outdoor property generally plans between $250,000 and $500,000 and above.
At the upper end, a meaningful share of the investment goes into work that is barely visible when it is finished. Base preparation, drainage, equipment runs, structural support. The objective is never to add as many features as the property will hold. It is to make the parts of the property feel as though they were always intended to belong together. More on investment.
Where we work.
Knäak Design Group is based in Naples and works throughout Southwest Florida, from Marco Island through Naples, Bonita Springs and Estero to Fort Myers. A significant share of our renovation work is in the established neighbourhoods, where the properties are old enough to need reworking and the architecture is worth answering to.
Renovations we have completed include a 1980s property brought forward, a functional refresh and a reinvented mid-century. The full portfolio is worth walking through before you inquire.
Common questions.
What does a full backyard renovation involve in Naples?
It begins with the property, not a product list. We survey what is there, what is failing, what is worth keeping, and how the house actually wants to open onto the site. On most Naples renovations that means the pool and its deck, drainage and grade, hardscape, planting, lighting, shade structures and outdoor cooking are all reconsidered together. Renovating them one at a time over several years is what produces a property that reads as assembled. Reworking them as one composition is what makes a finished property look inevitable.
How is renovating an existing outdoor property different from building new?
Renovation is the harder discipline. On new construction the site is open and the sequence is yours to set. On a renovation there is a mature landscape to protect, an existing pool shell and equipment run to evaluate, established grades and drainage that may or may not be working, and a family living in the house while the work happens. Much of the skill is in deciding what to keep. An existing pool is often structurally sound and worth reworking rather than demolishing, and that single decision can change the shape of the entire budget.
What does a whole-property outdoor renovation cost in Southwest Florida?
Our published planning range for the complete reworking of an outdoor property is $250,000 to $500,000 and above. A renovation limited to an existing pool and its immediate surround typically plans between $30,000 and $150,000. A single focused addition such as an outdoor kitchen generally plans between $25,000 and $75,000. These are planning ranges rather than estimates. The property, the condition of what exists, and the scope of the reworking determine where a specific project falls.
Can you renovate the pool without rebuilding the whole backyard?
Yes, and often that is the right call. A pool renovation can be scoped on its own, including finish, tile, coping, deck, equipment and lighting. What we will not do is treat it as a standalone object. Even a contained pool renovation gets designed with the sightlines from the house, the surrounding grade and the planting in mind, because those are what make the finished pool look like it belongs to the property rather than sitting on it.
How long does a backyard renovation take from design to completion?
Design and documentation generally run a few months, because the drawings are what keep the build honest. Construction depends entirely on scope. A contained pool and deck renovation is measured in weeks. A complete outdoor property reworking, staged around permitting, equipment lead times and a family in residence, is measured in months. We would rather give you a realistic sequence at the start than an optimistic one you find out about later.
